The Stamford & Rutland Infirmary
founded on the munificent donation of the late Henry Fryer esq, & supported
by that & other benefactions, is a large & handsome building in the
Tudor style, standing in a pleasant situation, in a spacious lawn, which is
ornamented with shrubberies etc & is approached through the ancient &
beautiful gateway of the White Friary. The building was opened August 5th, 1828,
& has accommodations for 32 in-patients. Towards the
foundation of this inestimable charity, Henry Fryer esq, of St
Martin's, who died in 1823, bequeathed the residue of his personal estate, which
amounted to about £8000, & now consists of £8219 new 3%, & 5 shares of
£50 each in the Gas Company; besides which the institution has £11,362 3%
consols, left by the late Stephen Rowles esq, & about £8800 of the same
stock, derived from numerous
benefactions & donations; & it receives, in yearly subscriptions etc
about £400 per annum, making its yearly income about £1300. Towards the
erection of the building & the augmentation of the endowment, £1768 was
derived from the profits of a bazaar, £1400 was given by the
Rutland Yeomanry Cavalry, £325 by the Ness Yeomanry Troop, £500 by Colonel
Pierrepoint, £500 by the late dowager Marchioness of Exeter, & sums of
various amounts by a numerous list of other benefactors. In 1855, it received
488 out-patients & 171 in-patients. The medical gentlemen & the clergy
of the town & neighbourhood lend their aid
gratuitously. Mr W R F Marchant is the house surgeon.
