St. Camillus of Lellis (1550-1614)
(The Patron Saint of Nursing)
Lellis was reduced to poverty from heavy gambling, and so decided to live a life
of penance. He became a Nurse at the Hospital of St Giacomo in Rome, and in 1584
ordained a Priest.
Lellis and his followers took a vow to devote themselves to the material and
spiritual care of the sick and those suffering from the plague. The Ministers of
the Sick were founded by Lellis, and became known as the Brothers of St
Camillus.
