Nottinghamshire Prisons

Her Majesty's County Prison, Nottingham, between Hucknall Road and Mansfield Road, Sherwood, is a substantial building of brick for 200 male prisoners, erected at a cost of £20,000, together with the out-buildings, comprising store rooms, cooking kitchens and laundry, hospital &c the whole being surrounded by a wall. A new block was added in 1894 for 40 females. The Governors residence and Officers Houses adjoin, and were built in 1891.

Her Majesty's Borough Prison, in St John's Street, occupies the site of a convent of the Hospitallers of St John of Jerusalem, and is a large structure of brick in the Italian style surrounded by lofty and massive stone walls. The building consists of central block and wings. The central block contains the Governors offices and Chapel. The wings being arranged for the modern system of prison discipline. It is now disused except a portion occupied as a Police Station and the Governors house, which is used as a Girls Home.
