Westmorland Prisons
Her Majesty's Prison, Kendal
Stands on a hill at the north end of the Town, adjoining the road to
Windermere, was built in 1786 on the site of an earlier thatched structure from
a plan said to have been suggested by John Howard, the eminent philanthropist,
who visited the old gaol in 1779.
In 1817 it was enlarged and much altered and has recently (1893) been further
enlarged and re-modelled at a cost of £7,500. The building contains 62 ordinary
cells besides 10 other cells or rooms but is now used only for Male prisoners,
Females being taken to Lancaster.
