Prisons within
the County of Yorkshire
Askham Grange,
York
Situated six miles outside York. It is a large country house providing
accommodation for approximately 60 female residents. An open prison is attached
to provide rehabilitation and outside work for Prisoners
Rothwell Debtor's Prison
This prison was formerly the poor-house belonging to the parish of
Rothwell, and was taken on lease by the Duchy of Lancaster, about the year
1814, for the purpose of converting it into a debtor's prison for the Liberty of
the
Honour of Pontefract.
The Liberty, situate in the West Riding of Yorkshire, extends westward to the
borders of Lancashire and Derbyshire, eastward to Goole, northward to the parish
of Thorney, and southward to that of Penistone.
The present keeper is coroner, as well as bailiff over the Liberty; he executes
the writs himself, and has the authority from the duchy to appoint deputies. He
purchased the lease of the premises and the appointment about 23 years ago, from
the former holder of them, with the consent of the duchy, for £4,000. The rent
stipulated to be paid to the Duchy by the tenant in occupation being £44 for
the first 4 years, and £84 for the rest of the term of 31 years, of which about
12 are to come. The fees at the period of his purchase were worth from £500 to
£600 a year.
