"Havannah" School Ship Cardiff

2 - Detailed Report on Certified Industrial Schools for 1865
"Havannah" School Ship Cardiff pp 067 Inspected 11th August 1865.
The ship was in good order, and the boys in good health.
The Midsummer holidays not having ended, the day scholars had not resumed their attendance, and I found only the boys under detention in the school.
They passed my examination very satisfactorily. All could read. The 1st class read, and also spelt, and answered my questions, and wrote from dictation very creditably. In ciphering most could do simple addition, subtraction, and multiplication, and some had advanced as far as compound addition. They were very orderly and attentive. The industrial training consists principally of wood-cutting, repairing their clothes, and naval exercise. The day scholars are employed as shoe-blacks and market-porters on Saturdays. Their earnings in these branches had been considerable.
There had been three cases of absconding. One of these boys has not since been heard of.
The average number of scholars for the year was 49; the number under detention on 31st December was 23. The cost for the year, allowing for a profit from the work and earnings of the boys of £72-3s-6d, was £388-19s-5d.
