CANTERBURY Poor Law Union and Workhouse

The parishes within the city form a Union for the relief of the poor, but the city of Canterbury, although under the jurisdiction of the Poor Law Commissioners, is exempt from the provisions of the New Poor Law Act as regard the election of its guardians, who are returned by a majority of the rate payers, & not by the property qualification. The City Bridewell, or City Workhouse - p 225:
in Lamb La, was an hospital founded by Archbishop Simon Langton, in 1240.
