West Ashford Union Workhouse
The Board of Guardians meet every alternate Wednesday at the Workhouse at
Westwell, at 12 o'clock. The population of the Union in 1901 was 20,559, area
42,340 acres and rateable value in 1902 £128,756
The Union comprises the following parishes:- Ashford, Bethersden, Charing,
Egerton, Great Chart, Hothfield, Kingsnorth, Little Chart,
Pluckley-cum-Pevington, Shadoxhurst, Smarden and Westwell.

The Workhouse, Westwell, renovated in 1902 at a cost of £5,000 is a
structure of brick, available for 240 inmates and containing an infirmary for 60
patients and a school for 33 Children.
