Birmingham Cottage Homes
Marston Green, in the Parish of Coleshill, contains a number of cottage homes,
14 in all, together with a probationary home, schools, infirmary, and a
supplementary house, residence for the Superintendent, workshops etc, erected by
the Birmingham Board of Guardians, and opened in January 1880; each of these
homes maintains 30 children, drafted from the Birmingham Workhouse, and is under
the care of Foster Parents.
The boys learn various trades, and the girls household work. A Chaplain attends
regularly to give instruction and conduct religious services.

St Pauls Catholic Home for boys is a certified poor law school, and a public
elementary school for 155 boys, and was founded in 1884 in connection with St
Joseph's Home for girls in Handsworth and St Mary's Home and Orphanage in
Maryvale. The building was greatly enlarged in 1889, and now receives about 100
Catholic boys from Birmingham and local Unions, who are educated in various
trades.
