Helston Workhouse and Poor Law Union

The Board of Guardians meet alternate Saturdays at 11.30am at the Workhouse, Helston. The area of the Union is 73,333 acres, rateable value 88,905 and population in 1891 was 22,117.

The Union comprised the following Parishes: Breage, Crowan, Cury, Germoe, Gunwalloe, Grade, Helston, Landewednack, Manaccan, Mawgan in Meneage, Ruan Major, Ruan Minor, St Anthony in Meneage, St Keverne, St Martin in Meneage, Sithney and Wendron.

The Workhouse, in Meneage Street, Helston is a large building of stone with granite dressings, erected in 1858 from designs by the Architect Fred William Porter. It later became The Meneage Hospital.
