Bideford Poor Law Union and Workhouse
Erected on Meddon Street, Bideford in 1836 from
designs by G. Gilbert Scott and W. Bonython Moffatt, it could accommodate 200
Inmates.

Comprises 18 parishes. The total average annual expenditure on the poor,
during the 3 years preceding the formation of the Union, was £7333, but in
1838, it was only £5225, & in 1849/50, £6428.17s.1d.
The Workhouse was
erected in 1835/6, & has room for 200 paupers. H A Harvie Esq, is union
clerk & supt.registrar; the Rev H Alford, chaplain; Mr & Mrs Stevenson,
master & matron of the Workhouse.
