Chester-le-Street Workhouse and Poor Law Union
The Board of Guardians meet every alternate Thursday at the Union Offices, at
2pm. The following are the places in the Union, Barmston, Biddick (South),
Birtley, Bourne Moor, Chester-le-Street, Cocken, Edmondsley, Harraton, Lambton,
Lamesley, Lumley (Great), Lumley (Little), Ouston, Pelton, Plawsworth, Urpeth,
Usworth (Great and Little), Waldridge, Washington and Witton Gilbert. The
population of the Union in 1901 was 60,552; total acreage 34,620 and rateable
value at Lady Day 1909 £354,890.

The Workhouse, erected in 1856 and enlarged in 1899, forms an extensive pile
of brick buildings, at the south end of the Town.
