Houghton-le-Spring Workhouse and Poor Law Union

The Board of Guardians meet monthly on Thursdays at the Board room Workhouse, Houghton-le-Spring, at 2.30pm. The population in 1901 was 40,847, area 16,360 acres and rateable value in 1909, land £15,912 and buildings £164,347.

The Union comprises the Townships of Eppleton, Herrington (East and Middle), Herrington West, Hetton-le-Hole, Houghton-le-Spring, Moorhouse, Moorsley, Morton Grange, Newbottle, Offerton, Penshaw, Rainton, Silksworth and Warden Law.

The Workhouse, Sunderland Street, a structure of brick with stone dressings, was erected in 1824 and will hold 203 inmates.
