Stockton Workhouse and Poor Law Union

The Board of Guardians meet every alternate Wednesday at the Board room, Nelson Terrace, at 10.30am. The area of the Union is 37,474 acres, rateable value Lady Day 1910 £421,678 and the population in 1901 was 66,297.

Stockton Union comprises the following places, Aislaby, Billingham, Carlton, Cowpen Bewley, Eaglescliffe, East Hartburn, Elton, Grindon & Thorpe Thewles, Long Newton, Newsham, Newton Bewley, Norton, Preston-on-Tees, Redmarshall, Stockton-on-Tees, Whitton and Wolviston.

The Workhouse, in Portrack Lane East, is a structure of brick, erected in 1851 and will hold 400 inmates. Eight Childrens Homes have been erected, four in Hartington Road and four in Windsor Road, the whole accommodate 120 children.
