Isle of Wight Workhouse
The House of Industry, Newport, Isle of Wight served all the
parishes
of the IOW. Built around 1797 opened for business around 1803.
Lasted until about 1947. (All dates unsubstantiated).
It was a Workhouse, Hospital, Lunatic asylum, and School. It had it's
own burial ground adjacent. It was apparently well ahead of the
minimum standards laid down by law some 60 years after it's opening,
and apart from the "disgrace" of being assisted was not disliked let
alone hated.
The building still exists and is now part social services and mostly
part of the St. Mary's Hospital built close by. The grounds and
courtyards uses are somewhat changed but if you carry a plan of the
original building it is easy to see what was where. The front facade
is hardly altered. But internally all the small rooms have been opened
out into modern wards.
