Hursley Poor Law Union and Workhouse

Hursley Poor Law Union was declared 27th July 1835, and included the parishes of Farley-Chamberlayne (with the tything of Slackstead), Hursley (includes the village of Ampfield), North Baddesley and Otterbourne (including the tything of Boyatt). Chandlers Ford being added in 1894.

The Workhouse was erected prior to the Poor Law Amendment Act, around 1828 and modified to become the Union House.

A new Union Workhouse was erected in Chandlers Ford from 1899 to 1900 by Cancellor & Hill, architects, which could accommodate 60 inmates. This building later became a sanatorium.
