Ashton under Lyne Poor Law Union and Workhouse The Union Workhouse in Market Street (former Dungeon
Street). Originally the "Parish Workhouse" or "Poor-house",
the building had evidently been enlarged in height after the time of it's first
institution (1730) in two old cottages on this site. To the right is the changed
frontage of the old Almshouses which were incorporated into the workhouse of
later days. (by 1854 its entrance was between these and the main building.) To
the left are the old pillars of the stocks
