Ashton under Lyne Poor Law Union and Workhouse

The Union Workhouse in Market Street (former Dungeon Street). Originally the "Parish Workhouse" or "Poor-house", the building had evidently been enlarged in height after the time of it's first institution (1730) in two old cottages on this site. To the right is the changed frontage of the old Almshouses which were incorporated into the workhouse of later days. (by 1854 its entrance was between these and the main building.) To the left are the old pillars of the stocks
