Rochdale Union Workhouse
Known as Dearnley Workhouse the Infirmary was erected 1877 and later became Birch Hill Hospital.
Rochdale resisted implementation of the Poor Law Act 1834 and many
demonstrations were seen leading to a visit from the Poor Law Commissioners.
Despite their demands to comply with the Act, the demonstrations continued. It
took Legal steps in London, when the Commissioners obtained an injunction, that
finally led to the erection of a Union Workhouse in Dearnley during 1877.
