Grimsby Workhouse

Grimsby Union was formed from parts of Caistor Poor Law Union. The Workhouse was erected in 1892 on Scartho Road, from the designs of the late Ernest W. Fairbrother of Grimsby and continued by H.P. Scaping, architect of Grimsby, at an estimated cost including site of £32,277 to accommodate 250 inmates.

The Board of Guardians met alternate Mondays at 3pm at Grimsby Town Hall, until the Workhouse was completed in 1894 when they met in the Board room.

By 1930, additional buildings included a receiving home for Children, and wards for phthisical patients, and a Nurses Home for providing additional accommodation for 20 Nurses and accommodation for recreation. The Institution at that time boasted a very up to date Operating Theatre, with total accommodation for 500 inmates.
