Axbridge
Poor Law Union and Workhouse
Axbridge Union Workhouse was
erected in 1837 from designs by Samuel T. Welch, architect, the ornate frontage
of the workhouse clearly hiding the stark rear elevation.
Axbridge Union comprised the parishes of Chapel Allerton, Axbridge, Badgworth,
Banwell, Berrow, Biddisham, Blagdon, Bleadon, Brean, East Brent, Brent Knoll,
Burnham, Burrington, Butcombe, Charterhouse, Cheddar, Christon, Churchill,
Compton Bishop, Congresbury, Hutton, Kewstoke, Locking, Loxton, Lympsham, Mark,
Nyland cum Batcombe, Puxton, Rowberrow, Shipham, Uphill, Weare, Wedmore,
Weston-super-Mare, Wick St Lawrence, Winscombe, Worle and Wrington.
The Infirmary was erected next to the Workhouse during 1903 in West Street, and
later under the NHS became St John's Hospital.
The Workhouse, although not
listed was converted in 1983 to private residential accommodation, called St
John's Court. A small portion was retained as Administration Offices for St
John's Hospital, until that was closed in 1993. The Infirmary building was
refurbished to become Axbridge Court, a Nursing and Residential Home
