RICHES AND RAGS

The History of a Site in College Street, Bury St Edmunds
1480 - 1997

Peter Plumridge

Riches and Rags records some of the author's research into the history of a site in the centre of Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, a history spanning five centuries.

It is the story of contrasts: once part of the College of Jesus holdings, thence a town house of gentry which became a school for young ladies; in 1748 a complete change when the buildings became the house for the poor of the town; in the late 19th century parts were sold off for warehousing and housing, alterations have continued.

The study seeks to provide an insight into the many changes which have befallen the location.

This book written by Peter Plumridge is available for £5.99 from all bookshops in Bury St. Edmunds, for example Ottaker's Bookshop, or by order using ISBN number.

The book contains a chapter on the Workhouse period 1748 until the sale of the greater part of the buildings in 1884. All inmates of Bury St. Edmunds had been removed to Thingoe Union House in 1878. Topics include the workhouse rules, diet, dress and punishments, to give an impression of workhouse life.

A further chapter concentrates on apprenticeship and focuses on 22 poor children who were sent to the cotton industry in the Manchester area.

In addition to the above named book, Peter has completed further research on the apprenticeship of poor children from the town of Bury St. Edmunds from 1753 to 1830. Copies of this research are held by Bury St. Edmund Record Office and the Society of Genealogists.
