RISBRIDGE UNION
Comprise 20 parishes in the Hundred, 6 parishes in Essex, namely Ashen,
Birdbrook, Bumpstead-Steeple, Bumpstead-Helions, Ovington, & Sturmer.
These 26 parishes contain a population of 17,4440 souls, of whom 13,565 are in Suffolk, & 3875 in Essex.
The Workhouse is at Haverhill, & was built many years ago, for the use of that parish only, but was enlarged in 1836, at the cost of £800, for the accommodation of the in-door paupers of this Union. It has room for 280 inmates, but had only 106 in July 1841, & 134 in Nov 1843.
The Board consists of 28 Guardians, of whom 2 each are chosen for Clare & Haverhill, & 1 each of the other parishes. J H Jardine esq, of Clare, is Union Clerk &
Supt.Registrar; Mr Frederick Laws, master of the Workhouse; Mr Charles
Punchard, auditor; & Mr T B Brook, of Kedington, is registrar of marriages for the whole Union. The latter is registrar of births & Deaths, & relieving officer for Haverhill district; & Mr Thomas Jolley for Clare district. Mr J P Brown is registrar, & Mr D Slater, relieving officer, for Wickam brook district.
