Atherstone Poor Law Union and Workhouse
A Poorhouse was erected in Long Street, Atherstone following the Poor Law Act of
1723. Four Bays were added in 1737 to meet the increasing need of the
population.
Atherstone Poor Law Union was declared 16th March 1836 and comprised the
parishes of
Ansley, Atherstone, Atterton, Baddesley
Ensor, Baxterley, Bentley, Fenny
Drayton, Grendon, Hartshill, Mancetter, Merevale, Oldbury, Polesworth, Ratcliffe
Culey, Sheepy
Magna, Sheepy
Parva and Witherley
Following the poor law amendment act 1834 Atherstone became a Union Workhouse.
Minute books can be read from 1867 to 1930 at the Warwickshire Record Office.
Population
in 1891 15,441; rateable value £86,291.
Board day every alternate Tuesday, at the Board room, Workhouse at 9.30am.
