1851 Meriden

Meriden Poor Law Union and Workhouse

Meriden Poor Law Union was declared 14th March 1836 and comprised the eighteen parishes of Allesley, Berkswell, Bickenhill, Coleshill, Corley, Coundon, Fillongley, Gt Packington, Hampton-in-Arden, Kinwalsey, Lea Marston, Little Packington, Maxstoke, Meriden, Nether Whitacre, Over Whitacre, Sheldon and Shustoke

The Board of Guardians took over the existing Parish Workhouse on Maxstoke Lane, a structure of brick to hold 120 inmates.

The population in 1891 was 10,892; area 47,770 acres; rateable value £97,308.

The Workhouse buildings have since been demolished and the site sold for new housing.
