Trowbridge Union Workhouse

Board day every other Wednesday  at 11am at the Poor Law Institution at Semington.
Chairman of the Board of Guardians, John H. Blake, Beechfield, Melksham.
Clerk to the Guardians and Assessment Committee, Ernest Alfred Newth, 9 Union Street, Trowbridge.
The Union comprises the following places:

  • Hilperton
  • Melksham Within
  • Melksham Without
  • Seend
  • Semington
  • Staverton
  • Trowbridge

The area of the Union is 16,394 acres, rateable value in 1915 was £92,717, and the population in 1911 was 19,895.

Poor Law Institution, Semington, a building of stone, erected in 1835 to hold 350 inmates.

The Public Soup Kitchen
In Frog Lane, for the gratuitous distribution of soup, was given to the Town by Mrs Gouldsmith in 1888.
