Droitwich Poor
Law Union and Workhouse
Following the 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act Droitwich Union was declared 16th
September 1836.
The Union comprised the following Parishes: North Claines, Crowle, Crutch, Dodderhill,
Doverdale. Elmbridge, Elmley Lovett, Hadzor, Hampton Lovett, Hanbury, Hartlebury,
Himbleton, Hindlip, Huddington, Martin Hussingtree, Oddingley, Ombersley, St Andrew
(Droitwich), St Nicholas (Droitwich), St Peter (Droitwich), Salwarpe, Stock and Bradley,
Tibberton, Upper Mitton, Upton Warren, Warnden and Westwood
The Workhouse, a substantial brick building, standing on an eminence near the
railway station, was erected in 1838 from designs by Sampson Kempthorne. The
building was based on the model "200-pauper" plan published by the
Commissioners in 1834 and cost £5,000; additions have since
been made including an Infirmary and Chapel so that it could accommodate 205 inmates.
The Board of Guardians met on Wednesday's, fortnightly at the Board room in the
Workhouse at 11am, which became known as "Board Day".

The buildings that comprised Droitwich Union Workhouse have now all been
demolished.
