Kidderminster Workhouse
Following the Poor Law Amendment Act 1834, Kidderminster Union was declared
20th September 1836.
The Union comprised the parishes of Bewdley, Broom, Chaddesley Corbett, Churchill,
Dowles, Kidderminster Borough, Kidderminster Foreign, Lower Mitton with Stourport,
Ribbesford, Rushock, Stone, Upper Arley and Wolverley
Kidderminster Union Workhouse was erected 1836-1838 on Sutton Road from designs
by William Knight and J. Nettleship, architects, and built of red brick to
accommodate 430 inmates. Extensive alterations and additions were made in 1884 under the
superintendence of Mr. W. Watkin, of Lincoln, architect. It cost £18,000 and
consisted of two new hospitals, one for Men with 66 beds, the other for Women
with 50; schools for 120 children, baking, brewing and boiler houses, laundry
and carpenters shops. The dining hall and kitchen were also enlarged.

The official address used for the Workhouse was 74 Sutton Road, Kidderminster.
The Board of Guardians met on "Board Day" alternate Tuesdays at 11am
at the Workhouse.

The Workhouse
buildings were integrated into the National Health Service and formed part of
Kidderminster General Hospital. The majority of these have now been demolished,
but the administration block continues in use as the Social Work department.
