Aysgarth Poor Law Union and Workhouse
Bainbridge Incorporation (Gilbert Union) was formed under an Act of Parliament
(22 Geo. 3, c.83) and comprised the parishes of High Abbotside, Low Abbotside,
Askrigg, Aysgarth, Bainbridge, Burton cum Walden, Hawes and Thoralby.
The workhouse, at Bainbridge, is a building of stone, erected in 1810, to
accommodate 60 inmates.

Aysgarth Union comprises 12
townships, with a population in 1904 of 4,506.

It became Aysgarth Poor Law Union in 1869 with the additional parishes of
Bishopdale, Carperby cum Thoresby, Newbiggin and Thornton Rust.
