Bedale Poor Law Union and Workhouse

Bedale Poor Law Union was declared 4th March 1839 and the Workhouse erected 1839 from designs by John and William Atkinson, architects. The Union comprised the parishes of Ainderby Miers with Holtby, Aiskew, Bedale, Burneston, Burrill with Cowling, Burton upon Ure, Carthorpe, Clifton under Ure, Crakehall, Exelby, Leeming and Newton, Firby, Gatenby, Hackforth, Killerby, Kirkby Fleetham, Kirklington cum Upsland, Langthorne, Masham, Rand Grange, Rootwith, Scruton, Snape, Swainby with Allerthorpe, Swinton with Watermarske, Theakston, Thirn, Thornton Walass and Well.

The workhouse, erected in 1839, is of stone, & will hold 100 inmates, but the average number is about 25; George WHITE, master, Rev. Windham de la Poer BERESFORD-PEIRSE M.A. acting chaplain; Francis R. EDDISON, medical officer; Mrs Mary WHITE, matron
The union comprises of 33 parishes and townships, and the population in 1901 was 8,436.
