Helmsley Poor Law Union and Workhouse

Helmsley Poor Law Union was declared 24th January 1837 and the new Union Workhouse erected 1859 from designs by John and William Atkinson, architects.

Workhouse, a building of stone, erected for 65 inmates, Robert LECKENBY, master; Joseph Francis PORTER B.A., M.D., Medical Officer; Mrs LECKENBY, matron.

Helmsley Union has 25 parishes/townships, and a population in 1901 of 5,176.
