Malton Poor Law Union and Workhouse

Malton Poor Law Union was declared 17th December 1836, and the former parish Workhouse was enlarged and utilised as the Union Workhouse.

The Workhouse, called "Spring Hall", Castlegate, & appropriated as a workhouse in 1735, is a structure of brick, rebuilt in 1789, and enlarged in 1893 for 200 inmates;

Malton Union comprised of about 50 parishes and townships, some in the North and some in the East Riding. Population in 1901 was 20, 454.

The poor of Old Malton have a yearly rent of £5 out of land left at Rillington by one Spencer. Those of New Malton have 20s out of a house in Low Street left by an unknown donor.
The Malton Workhouse in Low Street was erected in 1735 principally at the expense of the Wentworth family and was enlarged in 1789 In 1837 it as sold to the townships forming the Malton Union for the sum of £1332 and it has since been enlarged and divided into wards for the better classification of its inmates
