Barwick Incorporation
(Gilbert Union - Leeds West Yorkshire)
Barwick in Elmet was a Gilbert Union formed under an Act of Parliament (22 Geo.
3, c.83) until 1869. It comprised the Towns and Parishes of Acaster Selby,
Ackton, Appleton Roebuck, Askham Bryan, Barkstone Ash, Barwick in Elmet,
Bilborough, Bilton, Bolton Percy, Bramham-cum-Oglethorpe, Cattal, Catterton,
Clifford-cum-Boston, East Tadcaster, Featherstone, Ferry Frystone, Great Ribston
with Walshford, Hunsingore, Hutton Wandesley, Kirk Deighton, Kirk Fenton, Long
Marston, Newton Kyme with Toulston, Normanton, Pontefract Park, Purston Jaglin,
Ryther-cum-Oxendike, Seacroft, Shadwell, Steeton, Sutton, Thornville, Thorp
Arch, Tockwith, Ulleskelf, Walton, Whitwood, Wigton, Wike and Wilstrop.
The Workhouse had been erected pre-1834.
