Halifax Poor Law Union and Workhouse

Halifax Poor Law Union was declared 21 January 1837

Erringden, Heptonstall, Langfield, Stansfield & Wadsworth townships are in Todmorden Union, which decreased in population from 31,656 in 1841 to 29,727 souls in 1851.

The other eighteen townships are in Halifax Union, which comprises also Hartshead cum Clifton, & had 109,073 inhabitants in 1841, & 120,943 in 1851.

The Workhouse was built in 1837-38 at the cost of £10,000 & has room for about 420 inmates. Mr Charles Barstow is the union clerk & superintendent registrar; the Rev T Markey chaplain; Mr Benj & Mrs Holgate, maste & matron of the Workhouse.

Grapes for Beer at Halifax
The Halifax Guardians on Wednesday decided that the inmates of the Workhouse Hospital be provided with grapes in lieu of beer at their Christmas dinner. A proposal that the inmates of the workhouse be provided with beer brewed inside the house was adjourned.
