Thorne Union Workhouse

Thorne Poor House was erected in 1763. When Thorne Union was formed in July 1837, the building was pulled down and a Union House built at a cost of £3,173. 16s. 7d.  It was first occupied in April 1839 and could accommodate one hundred and fifty people - largely aged and infirm plus a large number of children. The Workhouse was for the following places and parishes : Althorpe, Amcotts, Belton, Crowle, Eastoft, Epworth, Keadby and Wroot - all Lincolnshire, and Fishlake, Stainforth, Hatfield, Sykehouse and Thorne in Yorkshire.
