Cahersiveen Union
The Cahersiveen Poor Law Union was formed 19th September 1840, and had a
population of 26,785.
The Workhouse
"Located approximately 3 miles from Cahersiveen on the Sugrena-Coars road, lies the shell of the Bahaghs Workhouse. In 1842 this was a lodge owned by local McCarthy family of nearby
Sugrena. 1846 saw it converted from a lodge to a sanctuary for the destitute.
A donation of £100 from Daniel O'Connell was among the many subscriptions received for this project.
When operating fully it had a Hospital, School, Residential quarters, Soup kitchen and a Church."
The Cahersiveen Relief Committee of 1921 no longer saw the need for the workhouse, and so it's doors were closed.
It was reoccupied, and used as a Barracks during the Civil War. Local men captured would be detained there for some time. On the 12th March 1923 five men were executed a short distance from the workhouse. A cross on the roadside now commemorates this spot.
The Daniel O'Connell referred to is "The Liberator"(1775-1847), responsible for achieving civic freedom for Irish Catholics in 1829 in the form of Catholic Emancipation - he was born in
Cahersiveen.
