Anglesey Workhouse

Anglesey Poor Law Union was officially declared 6th May 1837 and comprised the parishes of Amlwch, Coedana, Llanallgo, Llanbabo, Llanbadrig, Llanbedr-Goch, Llanddyfnan, Llandyfrydog, Llaneilian, Llanerchymedd, Llaneugrad, Llanfair-Mathafarn-Eithaf, Llanfairynghornwy, Llanfechell, Llanfflewyn, Llanfihangel-Tre'r-Beirdd, Llangefni, Llangwyllog, Llanrhwydrys, Llanwenllwyfo, Llechcynfarwydd, Penrhoslligwy, Rhodogeidio and Tregayan. The parishes of Bodewryd, Gwredog and Rhosbeirio were added to the Union 25th June 1858.

By 1861 the poor law union of Anglesey had a population of 17,840 and covered an area of 60,913 acres.

The Workhouse was built in the Town of Llanerchymedd, and although once derelict it has been renovated to provide a craft centre.

In 1852 the Holyhead Poor Law Union was formed from Anglesey Union.
