The Ruthin Poor Law Union was officially declared 4th February 1837. By 1861 the total area of the Union was 92,853 acres, with a population of 16,083.

The Ruthin Union Workhouse was erected in Llanrhydd Street, Ruthin. Many of these Workhouse buildings have now been demolished, but the Infirmary continues as Ruthin Hospital. The buildings were utilised as the Ruthin Red Cross Hospital 1914-1918.
