Cardiff Union Workhouse
Cardiff Union Workhouse was erected in Cowbridge Road, Canton, in 1839, and
then almost entirely rebuilt in 1880. Children were accommodated in the
Industrial School in Ely from 1863. Towards 1900 many children were fostered
out, but the remainder lived at the Headquarters Homes which were built on the
site of the Industrial Homes. In 1903 the original Industrial Schools were
changed to accommodate certain classes of Adult inmates ie "lunatics",
and the "infirm".
The Board of Guardians were abolished in 1930 and Cardiff City Council resumed
responsibility, although there was little change in the actual day to day
running of the newly named Poor Law Institution.
