Merthyr Tydfil Union

The Poor Law Union was formed in 1836 following the passing of the Poor Law Amendment Act 1834. The Union included the parishes of Aberdare, Gelligaer, Llanfabon, Llanwonno, Merthyr Tydfil and Ystradyfodwg in Glamorgan, Rhigos, Penderyn and Vaynor in Breconshire.

The Parishes of Llanfabon, Llanwonno and Ystradyfodwg were transferred in 1863 with other Unions from Cardiff, to the newly formed Pontypridd Union.

The Workhouse was erected 1853 at Thomastown, Merthyr Tydfil.

An Industrial School was opened for Children at Trecynon, Aberdare in 1877, and then Cottage Homes were built at Llwydcoed, Aberdare between 1912 and 1919. The Industrial School was then converted to a subsidiary workhouse for Adults.

The Merthyr Tydfil Board of Guardians was abolished by the Local Government Acts of 1929 and 1930, and the responsibility passed to Merthyr Tydfil Borough Council. The Workhouse and Cottage Homes continued in operation as Poor Law Assistance Institutions, maintaining the same Staff and Inmates.
