Pontypridd Workhouse and Poor Law Union

The Pontypridd Union was formed in 1863. Parishes from other poor law unions joined together, namely:

Eglwysilan, Llantrisant, Llantwit Fardre from Cardiff Poor Law Union, and Llanfabon, Llanwonno, Ystradyfodwg from Merthyr Tydfil Union, in effect uniting all the Rhondda Valleys together.

The Pontypridd Union Workhouse was opened two years later in 1865 in Courthouse Street. This was later referred to as The Central Homes. By Lady Day 1920 it could accommodate 500 inmates and a further 100 in the Infirmary. Following the introduction of the National Health Service the Workhouse became Graig Hospital. The Maesycoed Homes were located half a mile away, but maintained by the Central Homes administration, and accommodated children up to the age of five years. The Older children were admitted to the Cottage Homes located at Gartholwg, Church Village. They were erected in 1892, and further extended to accommodate 250 children. A branch Workhouse was erected at Llwynpia in 1903, and an infirmary added in 1903, which became Llwynpia Hospital in 1927.
