A Case Study of Newtown, Montgomeryshire by Lyn Williams.p57-120

Includes p 92 Newtown was not a Poor Law Union Centre, (This was at Caersws) and paupers formed only 2.3% of the total population; most of these, as Table 3.8 shows, being women. The majority lived on their own, or with a child to look after them. Included in this class are the retired and the annuitants. Many lived in Frankwell Street, Commercial Street, and Bryn Street, where also there were several uninhabited houses all three streets were on the Llanllwchaiaran side of the river.
