The Abergavenny Poor Law Union was
declared 27th April 1836. The workhouse
was built of Stone in 1834 from designs
by George Wilkinson, architect, to
accommodate 189 inmates. Situated on
what is now known as Hatherleigh Place,
Union Road, Abergavenny.

In 1861 the area of the Union was 60,178
acres, and the population 19,527.
The children attended the National
Schools at Abergavenny.
