Narberth Poor Law Union was declared 17
December 1836, followed by an order to
build the workhouse issued 12 May
1838.
Narberth Union Workhouse was erected
1838 for 150 inmates at a cost of
£2,500. It was constructed of local
stone quarried from a nearby site, and
designed by William Owen, architect of
Haverfordwest. The front building
contained the Guardians Boardroom,
offices, schoolteachers room and
separate male and female receiving
wards. The middle building consisted of
separate day rooms for men, women and
children. The third or rear block
consisted of the nursery, a day room for
elderly women, the vagrant ward and the
wash house. The dining room was in the
centre of the building, and the two
linking sections contained the Masters
accommodation and the kitchens.

In 1930 the building became Narberth
Public Assistance Institution, and then
in 1948 when the National Health Service
was introduced it became an Old Peoples
Home. It closed as a Home in 1972. The
site is now utilised as Holiday
Accommodation "Allensbank"
a beautiful site where the workhouse
buildings have been carefully restored
into use by the current owners. Highly
recommended accommodation for anyone
visiting the area.
