The Secretary of State's sanction has been given to the purchase of a site, as well as to plans which have been prepared, for the erection of an additional Asylum for this county. The site, within a short distance of Macclesfield, was described in our 21st Report. The plans provide for the accommodation of 610 patients at an estimated expense of £68,000.
Pending the construction of this new Asylum, which is expected to take 3 years, temporary day-rooms have been erected at the existing Asylum.

Plans for additions at a cost of £10,640 for the City and County Asylum were made (MH 83/17 Public Record Office

The Asylum for Pauper Lunatics, situated about one & a half miles from the City of Chester, is a handsome brick structure, with noble centre & wings, erected in 1829. The situation is salubrious & healthy; the premises are commodious, & in every respect convenient. Airing yards are provided, & the inmates have every attention & liberty of which their unfortunate position admits. There is at present accommodation for 300 inmates, but additions to the establishment are now in course of completion which will afford accommodation for 200 more. The whole of the establishment is under the direction of Mr Thomas N Brushfield, the superintendent of the establishment. Mr Henry Lewis is the Resident Surgeon, & the Rev Ralph Conglave, M.A., Chaplain.
