The Asylum for Pauper Lunatics, situated about one & a half miles from the City of Chester, is a handsome brick structure, with noble centre & wings, erected in 1829. The situation is salubrious & healthy; the premises are commodious, & in every respect convenient. Airing yards are provided, & the inmates have every attention & liberty of which their unfortunate position admits. There is at present accommodation for 300 inmates, but additions to the establishment are now in course of completion which will afford accommodation for 200 more. The whole of the establishment is under the direction of Mr Thomas N Brushfield, the superintendent of the establishment. Mr Henry Lewis is the Resident Surgeon, & the Rev Ralph Conglave, M.A., Chaplain. Source: UPTON - White Directory - p 201 Submitted by Betty Longbottom |
