Shepton Mallet Poor Law Union and Workhouse
Shepton Mallet Union Workhouse was erected 1848 in West Shepton from designs by Charles Wainwright, and based on the Square Plan. An interesting feature of this Workhouse is the Register Office integrated with the Porters Lodge.
The Poor Law Union of Shepton Mallet comprised the parishes of Ashwick, Babington, Batcombe, Binegar, East Cranmore, West Cranmore, Croscombe, Ditcheat, Doulting, Downhead, Emborough, Evercreech, Holcombe, Hornblotton, Lamyat, East Lydford, West Lydford, Milton Clevedon, East Pennard, Pilton, Pylle, Shepton Mallet, Stoke Lane, Stratton-on-the-Fosse and Upton Noble.

Following the introduction of the National Health Service it became Norah Fry Hospital, to care for Mentally Handicapped Patients, but was closed in 1993. The Buildings are listed as Crown Property and are under tight security, awaiting redevelopment.
