Scottish Poor Law
Scotland evolved a totally different system to that in England and Wales, based on a Voluntary "giving". Legal assessments could be applied but were only introduced in the Larger Towns around the 1830's. Many Parishes refused to give allowances at all.
Scotland had their own Royal Commission following a report from which, the 1845 Poor Law Act was passed providing that all those entitled were to receive an allowance.
A Central Control called the Board of Supervision was set up, but Parish based administration continued.
The National Archives of Scotland have produced "Poor Relief in Scotland" which includes facsimile copies of original records.
